British engineer E.H. Hunter founded Osaka Iron Works as a proprietorship in the Ajikawa area of Osaka in April 1881. The business was then incorporated as Osaka Iron Works Incorporated in May 1934. The name changed to Hitachizosen Corporation in March 1943.
